Has your view on Brexit changed?

How has the world’s perception of how Brexit would affect it?

The most recent explanation of the situation can be seen in this video –

MPs Reject Johnson’s Election Plans… Why? – Brexit Explained

Try comparing thoughts with this explanation taken from an article in CECA in 2016.

Of course, the content of each isn’t along the same line, one isan update on a political situation, another is a previous forcast.  However, what I want you to do with this is to tell me – how has your vision changed?

Personally – I’m somewhat worried about seeing some of my friends less. I do think though that the economical balance of the world is about to change. It will be interesting to see just how much – as London used to be the centre of the ecnomical world.  That is why we all speak English as a second language – right?

Some people have actually made the comment of not wanting to continue with English not being the official second language of the world – but to reverse to Spanish.  What do you think?

Maybe he couldn’t read the sign?

Link to article that sparked my interest.

On August 28th, aproximately 130 flights had to be cancelled in Munich.  The reason? You might rightfully ask yourself… None other than that of a young, uninformed twenty some year old Spanish guy, who WENT IN THE WRONG DOOR in the airport – you know, the one that says DO NOT ENTER – yes, that one.  The one that leads you to a place that, if you are not checked into any flights, or about to boarder another, well, you just can’t go through.

This led to mayhem, until the suspect was aprehended, as the results, in the eyes of the officials, could have been disasterous.

Who was this culprit then? An unsuspecting young man who did nothing intentionally.

What – was he paying attention to his phone? Did he not understand the sign? Did he even care?

Quite personally, I’m surprised that this type of thing doesn’t happen more often.  I don’t have the impression that many of us have an acute sense of being – surrounding.  Especially when I do look around – most people are highly distracted, and not quite present.

I don’t think that he’ll be making the same mistake twice – but I do think that it is something to bare in mind when considering how we interact with the world we are in.  Latelly I’ve been reading up on taking individual responsability, and how, if you don’t have your own «house» in order, well, how can you be expected to project something positive towards the rest of the world.  It’s true – I’m mixing up a few concepts, I don’t know who this young man is, nor of his real reasons, but I do think that this action speaks for many, and is a good respresentation of our world today.

What do you think?  Is the real solution to put up even more norms?

Have a great week-

What could go wrong with pushing China too far, right?

Everyone agrees that this is a time for deep political thought, for people to react and take action. People ARE actually voting! Changes can be made! We have all become oh too aware, that – for example – the decisions of some country folk in a different land (the main people responsible for Trump being in power) can affect – well, in this case, my son! He just bought a Huawei telephone for a «pretty penny» – just to discover a few days later that it may possibly be worthless, short-term.

This has become a trendy topic on everybody’s lips. How easily the rest of the world can see the power we have given, ignored for ourselves, as we’ve just gone on with our lives. Some say that it’s a test, to see how China reacts, some say it’s a tantrum of Trumps. Just another show of his negotiation «skills». Yet others describe a complot to rule the world- which we all know is true.

This article sums it up quite nicely. DO ENJOY – especially the parts where it makes sense that – does this trade war continue – we are just giving all the more strength to China, as it is exactly what they needed.

Suggested homework: your thoughts – or – find me the part of the article that cites what I just described, or better yet, answer the title: What could go wrong with pushing China too far?

The Marie Kondo effect

When was the first time you heard of Marie Kondo and her method? Under what circumstances did you have that conversation? A method to – improve your life? – to clean your house? – to end a marriage?

Yes! You heard right – the last conversation that I actually had was from a desperate wife – saying that her husband had gone crazy – even throwing out some of HER things!

Where does it all end? Where to draw the line?

For those of you who don’t realise what I’m talking about, the it topic in the recent past was the minimalistic interventions of her teachings. This article speaks about the movement (I venture to say). How less and simple leads to a happy life. It’s easy to validate (in your mind) – I mean, it’s a common practice to clear your desk off if you really want to get down and work. One seems to think better with a clear slate.

Meditation – yoga – exercise – it is all to clear your mind of noise. So this makes sense – right?

Well – what happens if you share your life, and SPACE with others? What do you do with all of your memories -acquired over the years?

So – my two bits of information is that – all is fine and dandy – as long as you agree with your partner on every single item involved in your cleansing process. I’m not sure if too many people would pass the test of that level of communication.

And you?

I can do that

Enjoy this 8 minute video, very easy to follow – and extremely funny – IF you are British. Quick question – is it funny for you also? Humour can be quite territorial.

Suggested homework –

  1. How many expressions can you get out of the others, for normal everyday situations – that didn’t go through?
  2. Describe some of the situations – from the other person’s point of view.
  3. Which skit do you like the most? I particularly can’t stop laughing when she starts translating (I suppose it’s not politically correct though – absurd as absurd can get!).

Politics and the social media: are we learning?

Everybody knows, as our dear Leonard Cohen would have said – but do they care? How much do each one of us actually appreciate how much information is collected about us and used in order to «improve our lives»? I for one, don’t mind – that much. Here’s the thing though – I don’t feel like I’m easily manipulated (sound familiar?). But I somehow also feel that – well, maybe I just don’t know enough on the topic.

Everybody was in awe and shock last year, when push came to shove, and Facebook’s (let’s be benevolent and call it «passive») participation in the persuasion of votes in the US elections. After that incident – be honest now – how many of you actually quit facebook? What, you didn’t? Ha – I didn’t think so!

It speaks of what I believe to be a step in the right direction. Now, in Spain, political parties will have to register as such, where all of the information will be of public knowledge, and they will be accountable for their spending.

What do you think – is it enough?

Where are the limits of our personal freedom?

We know that we are controlled – and we are all quite passive about it – we even reap the benefits I’d say. There is always some sort of plus to being offered exactly what you want, when you want it.

Let me ask you this – do you even read the fine print of the agreements sent to you when you download an APP? I had a friend who did – and I honestly thought he was «over-doing it» just a tad. It’s one of those conversations that if you have – you seem like a conspirationalist. We have decided – as not only a culture – but as a world – to ignore this subject. After all – we willingly give our consent, exchanging our privacy for a service we believe is necessary (in the APP of choice).

Please go onto this article and tell me what you think! This is an article detailing a research paper on the subject.

Let the debate begin!

Public Speaking for Beginners

Actually – I think this is an excellent video for a few reasons. ONE – if you don’t know these points – boy have you got alot of important things to learn! Now comes the interesting part – if you DO know what this is all about – EXCELLENT! Now that you’ve got the topic that you’re comfortable with – let me make a useful homework suggestion:

TAKE NOTES AS HE GOES. He speaks at an excellent pace, excellent intonation and emphasis. He is using excellent vocabulary. Why not? Watch the video and take as many notes as possible!! Send them to me – do we coincide? How many times did you have to pause or rewind? What was your issue – speed of the video – vocabulary used – or did you flat out not understand?

Enjoy!!

How far would you go to help your competition?

That is precisely the question that the CEO of Qantas airlines had to ask himself when he received this plee. He went all-out. He actually invited the head of the other airlines to visit their office, and got into detailed responses. Who was the audacious CEO who went straight out to ask him about his companies secrets you might be asking yourself?

A TEN YEAR OLD BOY!! He had taken it upon himself to create an airline in his free time – and came across a few glitches on the way – and decided to ask a «fellow CEO». ha ha ha.

Suggested homework:

What letter would you write to whom? Much in the same style – you know – an honest letter to your competition.

There is a lot to be said about writing an email properly.

There is a lot to be said for writing an email properly.  We have many requests for specialized classes.  Perhaps it is that in English we are much more to the point, however, not direct.  My recommendations: simplify.

Let’s get our conversation started with this video, as yourself these questions previous to watching it:

  1. What does she do for a living?
  2. How does she guide her employee to begin the email she is writing?
  3. What does her employee think of her job?
  4. Where does she get her inspiration?
  5. What does she say to her team to get them to go back to work?
  6. How would you describe where they are?

If you prefer to watch the original video (with subtitles), follow this link.

If you would like to follow up on email writing, click to go to this article that I highly recommend.  It is quite practical and gives examples.

I’m sure that this is a subject that we will come back to, so of course, any questions are welcome.  Remember, if you would like us to correct something if you would like to take these exercises as practice, send us an email!  empresas@metodoelingua.com
