How technology impacts the learning experience and training development

Has the use of digital technology—including desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, and other devices—changed how people learn? It’s very important to address these issues as we continue to experience remote and hybrid workplaces supporting a distributed workforce. And while these are somewhat broad questions, we can begin to find the answers we need by asking the journalistic questions: we can examine the who, what, where, when, why, and how of learning to get a sense of the impact technology is having and how that needs to inform our learning design.

A decade on and we’re—still—dealing with a global pandemic that has employers justifiably concerned about the levels of motivation and engagement in their dispersed workforce and how this is affecting productivity and resilience. Effective use of game-based eLearning in higher education

The theory behind game-based eLearning is that learners learn best when they have goals or targets to reach while also having fun. Game-based eLearning takes the competitive and scoring elements of video games, like points, levels, badges, and leaderboards, and applies them to an instructional context. Elements of game-based learning also include goals, rules, and objectives and can involve conflict, competition, and cooperation.

According to Brandon Hall Group’s Impact of Strategic Onboarding Study, companies suffer a 12% voluntary attrition among new hires, and most attrition occurs within the first 6 months in 51% of companies.

Not surprisingly, onboarding is a top business priority today. Induce learning mindsets to keep learners engaged

As eLearning experiences continue to scale as the de facto modality for learners in a remote world, it’s increasingly important for designers and developers to craft content that’s engaging, applicable, and empathetic to the needs of learners. Time is a very limited resource, and our job is to convince employees and leaders that learning is worth the investment.

As it stands, it’s simply too easy for learners to disengage with online learning by multitasking, button-smashing through content, or disregarding opportunities altogether. In these all-too-common scenarios, even if the completion rates are high, the amount of actual learning transfer may still be low—in which case, what’s the point? Moreover, research shows that once we think we’re good enough at our jobs (usually after just a few years in a profession), we stop trying to learn and instead focus solely on our daily work.

Gamification in corporate training has been around for quite some time. Many firms are adopting this concept to take advantage of the numerous benefits it provides.
