SOOOOOO many people ask me that question!  The truth is that you never really learn a language.  You acquire the ability to communicate more or less effectively in a different language.  Your limits depend on you.  The higher the level, the more difficult it is to feel that you progress.  When you are learning from a lower level, you learn something new every day, and that feels fantastic.

Let us narrow the question down.  Is it possible to feel comfortable in a conversation after one year, if you begin at a low level?  Yes.  The trick is to feel comfortable.  If you are striving for perfection, and want to express yourself the same way you do in your mother tongue… well, that will likely never happen.  Not after one year, not after twenty.  At these levels, once you have a few basic concepts, you can begin to construct upon them and get by.  The more you practice, the better off you will be.  Practicing is the key.

Another question.  Can one go from a “mid” level to an advanced level in one year?  Now that is a lot of work.  This is where I believe you really have to apply yourself.  It is not enough just to practice and construct upon a few basic concepts.  This is when you have to learn specifics, apply them, sit down, memorize vocabulary that is more complex, and feel the gist of the language.  Then you have to apply it… and most importantly, your ego has to allow you to do so.   If you find yourself not accepting correction.  Well… maybe this level is not for you.

Many people believe that language learning is like learning anything else.  I believe that it is an act of humbleness.  You have to be able to accept that you may not ever express yourself on the same level as you would like.  You have to be willing to show to the world that you make mistakes.  You have to wear your ego on your sleeve.  You have to accept correction; you have to work at it.

Apart from that?  No problem!

¿Es posible aprender el inglés en un año? ¿Cómo?

¡Son muchas las personas que me hacen esa pregunta! La verdad es que nunca aprendes un idioma. Adquieres la capacidad de comunicarte, más o menos eficazmente, en un idioma diferente. Tus límites dependen de ti. Cuanto más alto es el nivel, más difícil es sentir que progresas. Cuando estás trabajando en un nivel bajo, aprendes algo nuevo cada día, y eso sienta fantástico.

Vamos a reducir la pregunta… ¿Es posible sentirse cómodo en una conversación después de un año, si comienzas en un nivel bajo? Sí, el truco es sentirse cómodo… Si estás luchando por la perfección, y quieres expresarte de la misma manera que lo haces en tu lengua materna… bueno, eso, probablemente, nunca sucederá. No después de un año, ni después de veinte, pero sí puedes lograr fluidez de conversación en uno. En estos niveles, una vez que tengas algunos conceptos básicos, puedes empezar a construir sobre ellos y sobreviviràs. Cuanto más practiques, mejor estarás. Practicar es la clave.

Otra pregunta. ¿Se puede pasar de un nivel  medio a un nivel avanzado en un año? Sí, ahora que es mucho trabajo. Aquí es donde creo que realmente tienes que aplicarte. No basta con practicar y construir sobre unos pocos conceptos básicos. Aquí es cuando tienes que aprender detalles, aplicarlos, asentarte, memorizar vocabulario más complejo, y sentir la esencia del lenguaje. Después hay que ponerlo en práctica… y lo más importante, su ego tiene que permitir que lo haga. Tienes que aceptar las correcciones. Si no lo haces así, tal vez este nivel no es para ti.

Muchas personas creen que el aprendizaje de idiomas es como aprender cualquier otra cosa. Creo que es un acto de humildad. Tienes que ser capaz de aceptar que no podrás expresarte nunca al nivel que te gustaría. Tienes que estar dispuesto a mostrar al mundo que cometes errores. Tienes que dejar tu ego de lado. Has de aceptar la corrección. Tienes que trabajar en eso.

¿Aparte de eso? ¡No hay problema!
